Elder Abuse and Human Right Violations: How it Happens and How to Avoid it

On December 5th, 2016, a human right was violated when an elder was abused. Jimmy Llenares, a resident in Maple Avenue, was shoveling his driveway in a cold afternoon, when suddenly three teenage girls threw snow at Jimmy without hesitation. Jimmy was, unfortunately, sad and mad. Of course, he didn’t say a word because he didn’t want to get in trouble. Jaqlyn had questioned him about the incident, and this was his reply verbatim. “On December 5th, there was 3 ladies walking on the alley, while I was shoveling the snow. They throw snow at me! What dah heck?”

This is a big problem. People should care about violations of human rights and elder abuse, because clearly it could happen to anyone and everyone in the world. They need to know how to stop either the violations of human rights and to stop elder abuse as well. Human Rights is a right that is believed to belong justifiable to every person. The human right that the teens had violated was Article 5: Ban on Torture. This means that no one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. The teens violated this human right by throwing snow at Jimmy forcefully and in a cruel way. Everyone has human rights and it is wrong for another human being to violate them. To stop human right violating, people should just mind their own businesses and not do any obscure actions towards other people, especially when the person is an elder.

The teens not only violated Jimmy’s human right, but they also committed elderly abuse. Physical abuse was the type of abuse that the three teenage girls had committed. As mentioned earlier, they threw snow at him. Jimmy is indeed considered an elder, because he is 73. Elderly abuse occurs everywhere. 1 in 10 Americans over the age of 60+ get abused, in which is considered as elderly abuse. Approximately 5 million elders get abused. Physical Abuse means inflicting physical pain or injury upon an older adult. The signs of physical abuse is bruises, pressure marks, broken bones, abrasions, and burns.

Elder abuse, once again, happens anywhere. Based on this article about elder abuse, the author states, “A doctor and judge had recently ruled her mother – by then in her 70s – incapacitated – unable to make decisions for herself. They appointed a legal guardian, shortly before she began her stay at Longhorn Village. But after only a few months of living there, her daughter says she noticed a change in the woman who was once so warm and engaging.’(My mother) became more and more distraught,’ she said.’She talked about wanting to move. She became more withdrawn and upset.’The woman’s legal guardian and family claimed in a lawsuit filed against the facility that she was sexually assaulted twice in 2012 by a male resident described as a’sexual predator.’ Claiming the Longhorn Village failed to protect the woman, the suit further alleged the man’s’sexual activities were known to the administration, but nothing was done to protect his victims.’ “ (Source: http://story.kxan.com/elder-abuse/) This proves that any type of elder abuse can occur to almost anyone anywhere. In this case, it happened to an elder woman at a nursing home. She had been sexually assaulted by a caregiver at the nursing home. This is technically abuse, because unfortunately she has dementia and didn’t exactly know what was going on. To sum it all up, elder abuse and human right violations should be put to a stop.

Genetic Engineering - Nonfiction Reader Response

The book that I am currently reading is Genetic Engineering by Steve Parker.  This book talks about what genetic engineering is and how everything works. Genetic engineering is when you study and/org examine living cells and their DNA, while experimenting on them. There is a wide selection of living organisms that genetic engineers can experiment on. From human DNA cells to a flowe'rs cell.

A passage that I found interesting in the book is about "What Are Genetic Conditions?", stating, "The  genes for the human body are instructions, not only for the finished body, but for the developing and growing process, too. If there is a tiny fault, such as a missing gene or one which is slightly altered, the body may not be able to develop or work normally. There are thousands of different genetic conditions. Some have little effect on healthy, although they may be noticeable. Examples are a red mark on the skin, called a birthmark, or an extra finger or toe. Other genetic conditions can cause serious healthy problems. If the heart does not develop in the normal way, for example, it may not pump blood around the body effectively." I thought this was very interesting because of how it explained that there are many genetic conditions and the author told me some types of conditions. It was very intriguing to learn more about genetic conditions, so my curiousity searched up more information about the possible genetic conditions.

Some of the things that I have learned from reading this book is about GMO's, Genetic Conditions, and lastly, Faulty Genes.GMO stands for 'genetically modified organisms'. Genetically engineered foods could possibly have a different size and/or a different taste, also even the texture and consistency. Moral of the story, genetically modified foods could be different from the original foods, and could even be the same. Genetic Conditions are, to put it in my own words, abnormality. A genetic condition that I found interesting was about the heart. If the human heart isn't developed correctly due to the faulty gene, it would have a major impact in the human body.

I was surprised when I was really into the book, because usually I don't really read non fiction on my free time, but after reading this book, I may take interest into more non fiction books. Considering the fact that I would like to be in the medical field when I grow up, Genetic Engineering will probably be another suggestion for my future career.

Gratitude Blog

I am very grateful for my mom, Jamie. She's a single mother and she works her butt off everyday of the week. My mother is the only one who has been through everything for me. My mother knows me from head to toe, inside and out. She's always prioritizing my happiness before her own and I thank her for that. I always irritate the soul out of her but somehow and someway, she always loves me no matter what I do or say. My mother has been through the worst at some points just for me and I am very very thankful. She knows when something is wrong and she comforts me. She encourages me to get better grades in the most irritating ways, but it really helps and I still will always love her. My mother has been my mother and father. Unfortunately, growing up, I didn't always have a Father figure. My mother was both. She's always finding a way to become a Father figure.

I'm thankful for my best friend, Dena Ahmed. We've been best friends for almost 10 years. Dena knows my deepest secrets and I know hers. Whenever I am emotionally feeling down, the first person I go to is Dena. Dena is like family. My grandparents, my aunts and uncles, and even my mother treat her as if she if family, because honestly she is. I always bring Dena to my family parties and she always has a way of making it a blast for me and I am really thankful for that. Dena is my main one for sure. I can always always always count on Dena. Even though I'm 6 inches taller than her, she's kind of like my big sister in a way. Like, she tells me what's right and what's wrong before I take action onto anything. She tells me what could possibly happen if I ever did anything bad. Dena knows me from head to toe, and inside out as well.

I am really blessed for my Grandpa. My Grandpa is the coolest man I've ever met, and I really mean it. He gets really mad easily, but we both laugh it off. My Grandpa has always been there for me no matter what. I can joke around and even play with him. He's the funniest Grandpa ever. Whenever I cry, he finds a way to make me laugh, even if he's the one who made me cry. Something I sort of hate is when he imitates me crying, which makes me not only mad, but I laugh too. The faces he makes when he's trying to make our cousins and I laugh are priceless. My Grandpa drives funny. It makes me smile. My Grandma keeps yelling at him for the way that he drives, though. My Grandpa and I laugh at her. I am very very very very blessed to have him as my Grandpa. He cooks me food and he buys me so much ramen noodles. He buys my Guinea pigs' food, too. My Grandpa can build bedrooms and build doors and even make his own slippers. He knows how to make ice candy and knows how to fix a bike's chain. My Grandpa picks me up from school from the hottest weathers to the coldest. One time, he even picked me up by walking to my school. We walked home together. I am thankful for his voice. He's a great singer. He likes to sing Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Once, I even heard him sing a 21 savage song and it really made me laugh because he was clueless of what the lyrics meant.  I shared a lot of moments with my Grandpa that will forever be in my heart. I am blessed, thankful, and grateful for my Grandpa, Jimmy.

Article of the week Impressions

Today, I have learned many things from our gallery walk that my classmates and I had during class. The first student I encountered was Isaiah. His topic was about scientists discovering a super earth. It peeked my interest because it was cool how the scientists discovered a super earth, Hopefully living things grow on it. The second student I had encountered with was Juan. Juan's topic was about a New Zealand Earthquake. Surprisingly, only 2 people died during the earthquake. In my opinion, New Zealand was somewhat lucky because, like I said, only 2 people died. When I stumbled upon my classmate, Josh, his topic was intriguing to learn more about. Josh's topic was about how the Syrian city, Aleppo, has received text threats from the regime, although Aleppo doesn't trust the regime. It made me wonder. "Why is the regime sending text threats to Aleppo specifically?" Of course, I'd have to research about it on my own time.

When I went to Selena's gallery, she informed me about scientists finding 2,000 new planets. I was very eager to learn more because all in all, 2,000 planets is a lot. I asked myself, "How do scientists just find 2,000 more planets out in the infinite galaxy? It was surprising. I was also very very curious because I imagined life being grown and happening in some of those planets and we may or may not even know about it. Before Selena's gallery, I then visited David's. David's topic was about self defense. I learned that having a gun in your house doubles the chance of homicide and triples the chance of suicide. It shocked me, because the fact of having a gun in your house is supposedly for self defense, then someone ends up either committing a homicide and/or committing suicide rather than self defense. It's shocking how a gun can be used for many things when it's specifically owned for one reason.

E l e c t i o n R e f l e c t i on

Some of you will be voting in the next election. Are you excited? Why or why not?

I am actually excited. I am excited because I want to be apart of the election. I want to have my opinion shared out, although, it won't really be heard because my vote won't really matter. It's all about the electoral votes. Either way, I want to be given an "I voted" sticker after voting. I am excited because I get to choose and no one has to know. The votes are somewhat private.

What are your thoughts on the election results?

To be honest, I'm triggered. I'm disappointed. Donald Trump as the new president is really shocking. Plus, he's really petty. He lives up to the stereotypes. Trump says that he believes that all mexicans are rapists. I don't think we should have a racist president. I would have voted for Hilary, because she's about woman rights and same sex marriage and etc. Hilary would've made history as being the first female president.

Would you liked to be involved in more politics? if so, how?

I should probably read articles about our politics. Also, I should watch the news more often to keep myself updated. I could be involved clubs in high school, like student body president. It'll feel like I'm the president of the United States. Hopefully I'll be involved in something like that in high school. There is also a debate team. It's possibly related to the government in a way.

IKEA: An environmentally friendly store

On October 22, Jaqlyn visited iKea with his father, step mother, and her 4 brothers, Joey, Jian, Jakob and Joakim, although his nickname preferably used is Jaoi. Jaqlyn was scrimmaging through the grocery area of iKea, when she had realized that customers had been walking out with either their furniture pieces in hand, or furniture in the blue bags purchased from the store. Jaqlyn questioned herself,  “Why do you need to purchase yourself a blue bag when the store can simply give away plastic disposable bags?”. Supposedly the reason why iKea doesn’t use disposable plastic bags is because the bags that were once used from iKea could end up somewhere in the ocean, or end up in landfills. iKea is “environmentally friendly”.

Jaqlyn had witnessed people bring their cars to the exits of iKea, and load their cars with the items they had purchased, other than purchasing the plastic reusable bags and loading their items in there. This shows that for sure iKea is an environmentally friendly store. They reduce the use of disposable plastic.

In the cafe of iKea’s store, there has also been sightings of ceramic plates and glass cups, other than the use of plastic plates and cups, and also, the store uses metal silverware. This also proves that iKea is not too big of the use of disposable plastic. Although, in their packaging, there are plastic bags with the screws and nails in them when buying furniture that include so. That must means they indeed use plastic bags, so iKea is trying to lessen down the use of disposable plastic. All in all, iKea is all about lessening the use of disposable plastic. After all, it somehow always ends up in either landfills and/or oceans.I wonder what other oddly satisfying things hold IKEA.

1st Quarter Reflections

What are your goals for ELA for the next 3 quarters?

I have some goals I'd like to achieve for ELA in the next three quarters. My first goal is to be more on task and involved, other than first quarter. I'd like to focus more and not always have to question what to do after being told. My second goal is to kick up my grades. I'd like to receives 3's and 4's from this class, other than having 3's and 2's. First quarter at the moment I can guarantee that I have 3's and 2's, and unfortunately I don't like having 2's, so I just need to up my game a bit more. My third goal is to be known for something great in ELA. Something great as in "The 8th Grader who had received multiple awards". Now that is something I have to work hard for. I have to actually be more focused and involved my work in order to be known.

How has your writing progressed?

My writing has progressed  a lot this quarter. I have been using some of my vocabulary words as my everyday dictionary. I have been very detailed when writing. I've been using what they call 'big words', and 'they' as in the students and teachers. My grammar has been on point, along with my sentences making sense. I make sure that all my sentences go well together and make clear explanation. I capitalize my words, specifically proper nouns. I may have incorrections in this blog, although I will somehow improve by following my goals that I have mentioned earlier.

What strategies have benefited you?

There is one strategy that has mostly helped me throughout the first quarter of ELA, and that is the 5 W's. The 5 W's are Who? What? When? Where? Why? It has helped me with writing, because it's like a writing template. It's perfect for when you are trying to produce a news story. A news story will be asking the following 5 W's, and I'd be able to answer them because the strategy really does support your news story. The strategy doesn't even have to be just used on a news story. You can use it for blogs, and the 5 W's has assisted me with both blogs and  news stories. I love using the 5 W's method, because it is very beneficial, easy, and simple.

Film Vs. Book

In The Giver, the community from the book is different from the movie. From The Giver in the book version, the community was described differently. Nothing was stated that there was a contraption involving a grass triangle with a water fountain, although in The Giver from the movie version, a grass triangle was shown in the middle of the movie where Jonas, Asher, and Fiona had met up. None of which was mentioned from the book. The book had not explained anything about the grass triangle. The community in the book mentioned that there had been a river bank. "...to the riverbank and watched, intrigued," (Chapter 1, page 1), although, in the movie, nothing was mentioned about a river. I did not see any rivers or any river banks.

In the movie The Giver, the actor who was assigned as Jonas had not been what I had in mind/what I imagined. In the book of The Giver, the author had stated that Jonas had ‘funny eyes’. “...and he has funny eyes like yours, Jonas!” (Page 20, Chapter 3). This explained how him and Gabriel had the same funny eyes. In the movie, it did not show the ‘funny eyes’ or no similarities, but the marking on the arm had been identical to Jonas’ arm and Gabe’s as well. I imagined Jonas as a young boy with brown hair and blue eyes, in which I had thought the blue eyes identified as ‘funny eyes’.

The ending of The Giver from the movie and from the book was different. In the book, it had mentioned that Jonas had been losing consciousness, “Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled,” (Chapter 23, page 179). Now, in the movie, it showed that Jonas had only fainted for a while, although got back up and went down a sled. The book did not mentione anything about fainting, then going on a sled. That is how the book and the movie are somewhat different, yet then again somewhat similar. Although, I understood The Giver in the formatting of the book. I understood more because The Giver was originally from the book, and the story of The Giver was explained much more detailed and everything had meaning, as in I was informed about the stirrings and how all the people who had experienced it must have their morning injections. Unlike the movie, the book had background information for everything. In the movie, everything happened so fast and all the information was being thrown at me and the viewers. I suggest you read the book other than watching the movie.

The Giver - Theme Blog

Based on what I have read from The Giver, Jonas is a dynamic character. In the beginning of the book, Jonas wasn’t informed the real meaning and feeling of the word apprehensive, stated in the following quote, “I’m feeling apprehensive,” (Page 8.) To sum it up, Jonas did not really know about the word apprehensive. Later on in the book, he uses the word love, knowing what love is. The word love was used in the following sentence, “Do you love me?” (Page 127.) This shows that Jonas was actually curious about it, and knows what love is, other than actually knowing what the word apprehensive meant.

Jonas has been feeling more emotions and feelings throughout the book. One of the emotions he had been feeling is anger, and frustration. In the book, the author states, “ ‘I won’t! I won’t go home! You can’t make me!’ Jonas sobbed and shouted and pounded the bed with his fists.” (Page 152.) This proves that Jonas had a type of emotion, and that emotion was, once again, anger and frustration.

While reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, there are many tough questions shard by the main character, Jonas. One such question is the the labeled age. This question makes me wonder about the age. Are the One's, Two's, and ascending numbers the age? It makes me wonder why they treat it like it is some kind of label. There are ceremonies for each number, in which also confuses me.In chapter 2, Jonas and his father discuss about the Ceremonies of 12, and his father explains vividly about his Ceremony and what had happened." 'When I was an Eleven,' his father said now, 'as you are, Jonas, I was very impatient, meriting for the Ceremony of 12. It's a long two days. I remembered that I enjoyed the Ones, as I always do, but that I didn't pay much attention to the other ceremonies, except for my sister's."

While reading The Giver, there are many memory moments, although one introduced memory moment is Jonas' father bathing a new child. Why might this memory be important? This memory may be important because Jonas knows how to bathe the Old, by watching his father bathe a new child. Bathing the Old is somewhat a special thing, considering the fact that the Nakedness is prohibited, but in other words it's bad to see someone else naked, although bathing the Old and the new childs is acceptable. In chapter 4, Jonas is bathing the old with his friend Fiona, when he remembers, "Last night he had watched as his father bathed the new-child. This was much the same: the fragile skin, the soothing water, the gentle motion of his hand, slippery with soap. The relaxed, peaceful smile on the woman's face reminded him of Gabriel being bathed"

Welcome to my Blog

Hey, it's Jaqlyn, and I'm here to welcome you to my blog. I'm currently in 8th grade and I'm learning new things. This is my academic blog.

I like eating new things, like exotic foods such as fried crickets. In my free time, I like to go out and bike at my nearest park, write stories in my notebook, draw random things, and just check and play games in my phone. My favorite subject in school would have to be Science, because further into science, we dissect living frogs. The goals in my life is to become a Cardiothoracic Surgeon, own a Bentley, live in a decent home with my pets, move my family out of Chicago and somewhere nicer, but long story short I just want to be able to say I made it and actually mean it.

Thanks for visiting my blog! I'll be back as soon as I can!
