IKEA: An environmentally friendly store

On October 22, Jaqlyn visited iKea with his father, step mother, and her 4 brothers, Joey, Jian, Jakob and Joakim, although his nickname preferably used is Jaoi. Jaqlyn was scrimmaging through the grocery area of iKea, when she had realized that customers had been walking out with either their furniture pieces in hand, or furniture in the blue bags purchased from the store. Jaqlyn questioned herself,  “Why do you need to purchase yourself a blue bag when the store can simply give away plastic disposable bags?”. Supposedly the reason why iKea doesn’t use disposable plastic bags is because the bags that were once used from iKea could end up somewhere in the ocean, or end up in landfills. iKea is “environmentally friendly”.

Jaqlyn had witnessed people bring their cars to the exits of iKea, and load their cars with the items they had purchased, other than purchasing the plastic reusable bags and loading their items in there. This shows that for sure iKea is an environmentally friendly store. They reduce the use of disposable plastic.

In the cafe of iKea’s store, there has also been sightings of ceramic plates and glass cups, other than the use of plastic plates and cups, and also, the store uses metal silverware. This also proves that iKea is not too big of the use of disposable plastic. Although, in their packaging, there are plastic bags with the screws and nails in them when buying furniture that include so. That must means they indeed use plastic bags, so iKea is trying to lessen down the use of disposable plastic. All in all, iKea is all about lessening the use of disposable plastic. After all, it somehow always ends up in either landfills and/or oceans.I wonder what other oddly satisfying things hold IKEA.

1st Quarter Reflections

What are your goals for ELA for the next 3 quarters?

I have some goals I'd like to achieve for ELA in the next three quarters. My first goal is to be more on task and involved, other than first quarter. I'd like to focus more and not always have to question what to do after being told. My second goal is to kick up my grades. I'd like to receives 3's and 4's from this class, other than having 3's and 2's. First quarter at the moment I can guarantee that I have 3's and 2's, and unfortunately I don't like having 2's, so I just need to up my game a bit more. My third goal is to be known for something great in ELA. Something great as in "The 8th Grader who had received multiple awards". Now that is something I have to work hard for. I have to actually be more focused and involved my work in order to be known.

How has your writing progressed?

My writing has progressed  a lot this quarter. I have been using some of my vocabulary words as my everyday dictionary. I have been very detailed when writing. I've been using what they call 'big words', and 'they' as in the students and teachers. My grammar has been on point, along with my sentences making sense. I make sure that all my sentences go well together and make clear explanation. I capitalize my words, specifically proper nouns. I may have incorrections in this blog, although I will somehow improve by following my goals that I have mentioned earlier.

What strategies have benefited you?

There is one strategy that has mostly helped me throughout the first quarter of ELA, and that is the 5 W's. The 5 W's are Who? What? When? Where? Why? It has helped me with writing, because it's like a writing template. It's perfect for when you are trying to produce a news story. A news story will be asking the following 5 W's, and I'd be able to answer them because the strategy really does support your news story. The strategy doesn't even have to be just used on a news story. You can use it for blogs, and the 5 W's has assisted me with both blogs and  news stories. I love using the 5 W's method, because it is very beneficial, easy, and simple.

Film Vs. Book

In The Giver, the community from the book is different from the movie. From The Giver in the book version, the community was described differently. Nothing was stated that there was a contraption involving a grass triangle with a water fountain, although in The Giver from the movie version, a grass triangle was shown in the middle of the movie where Jonas, Asher, and Fiona had met up. None of which was mentioned from the book. The book had not explained anything about the grass triangle. The community in the book mentioned that there had been a river bank. "...to the riverbank and watched, intrigued," (Chapter 1, page 1), although, in the movie, nothing was mentioned about a river. I did not see any rivers or any river banks.

In the movie The Giver, the actor who was assigned as Jonas had not been what I had in mind/what I imagined. In the book of The Giver, the author had stated that Jonas had ‘funny eyes’. “...and he has funny eyes like yours, Jonas!” (Page 20, Chapter 3). This explained how him and Gabriel had the same funny eyes. In the movie, it did not show the ‘funny eyes’ or no similarities, but the marking on the arm had been identical to Jonas’ arm and Gabe’s as well. I imagined Jonas as a young boy with brown hair and blue eyes, in which I had thought the blue eyes identified as ‘funny eyes’.

The ending of The Giver from the movie and from the book was different. In the book, it had mentioned that Jonas had been losing consciousness, “Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled,” (Chapter 23, page 179). Now, in the movie, it showed that Jonas had only fainted for a while, although got back up and went down a sled. The book did not mentione anything about fainting, then going on a sled. That is how the book and the movie are somewhat different, yet then again somewhat similar. Although, I understood The Giver in the formatting of the book. I understood more because The Giver was originally from the book, and the story of The Giver was explained much more detailed and everything had meaning, as in I was informed about the stirrings and how all the people who had experienced it must have their morning injections. Unlike the movie, the book had background information for everything. In the movie, everything happened so fast and all the information was being thrown at me and the viewers. I suggest you read the book other than watching the movie.

The Giver - Theme Blog

Based on what I have read from The Giver, Jonas is a dynamic character. In the beginning of the book, Jonas wasn’t informed the real meaning and feeling of the word apprehensive, stated in the following quote, “I’m feeling apprehensive,” (Page 8.) To sum it up, Jonas did not really know about the word apprehensive. Later on in the book, he uses the word love, knowing what love is. The word love was used in the following sentence, “Do you love me?” (Page 127.) This shows that Jonas was actually curious about it, and knows what love is, other than actually knowing what the word apprehensive meant.

Jonas has been feeling more emotions and feelings throughout the book. One of the emotions he had been feeling is anger, and frustration. In the book, the author states, “ ‘I won’t! I won’t go home! You can’t make me!’ Jonas sobbed and shouted and pounded the bed with his fists.” (Page 152.) This proves that Jonas had a type of emotion, and that emotion was, once again, anger and frustration.
